Event Description
The LWVNYS last year adopted a position in favor of amending state election law to use Ranked Choice Voting combined with all-party primaries to govern elections statewide. We'll be working towards that, but these reforms are not widely known, so it could be a while before that comes to pass. Some Leagues in NY are moving ahead, proposing city charter amendments to bring those reforms to their city. Rochester has been proposed as a logical city to do this. In this meeting we'll discuss what it would take to pass a charter amendment in Rochester to bring RCV and all-party primaries here. We'll take about the process of amending the charter, and we'll also discuss the details. What needs to be included in the proposed charter amendment?

We'll be joined by David Green, organizing director for Unite NY, a good-government non-profit the League has been working with on various electoral issues. We'll talk about how RCV works, how all-party primaries work and how they would affect governance and politics in Rochester. It's done in different ways in different places, and we'll try to arrive at a consensus on how we propose to do it in Rochester.

Want to get up to speed before the meeting?
  • Watch Majority Rules 101 on YouTube. It's a free 34 minute cut of the longer documentary.
  • Watch Majority Rules, a 90 minute documentary about the Alaska elections in 2022 where Final Five elections probably changed outcomes in ways that affected the whole country. It's 92 minutes. It's available to stream for a small fee on Apple+ and Amazon prime. We showed it last year at the Henrietta Public Library.
