In the U.S., pedestrian fatalities are up 75% since 2010. In Monroe County, an average of 13 bicyclists and pedestrians die on our streets every year and thousands more are injured. In June 2024, the City of Rochester joined over 60 municipalities in adopting a Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries. In order to make our streets safer for all forms of transportation, we need to redesign streets to protect bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users. Cody Donahue will discuss what such street redesign can look like. Since 2022, New York State has allowed suburban towns, villages and cities to lower their speed limits on local roads to 25 MPH. This session will give an overview of the advocacy that local residents can do to support their localities to support lower speed limits, which have been shown to improve safety for all users.
