Participants will explore the ratification process of the 19th Amendment, which grew out of decades of advocacy by the suffragists and their allies. We will explore the connections to federalism, as we discuss the beginning of women’s suffrage out West in the late 1800s and its eventually spread to the rest of the nation. Participants will also discuss the hard work of the Civil Rights Movement years after ratification to extend voting rights on the ground to all women, including women of color.
