Years ago the health and environmental problems created by high volume hydraulic fracturing led to a statewide ban on fracking with water. What might happen if CO2 is used?

Surprisingly, a company known as Southern Tier Solutions, has proposed to drill into the Marcellus Shale of New York using compressed carbon dioxide to extract gas. Many landowners in Chemung, Tioga and Broome counties have already signed leases giving permission to do so. What might be the consequences?

To address these questions the League of Women Voters of Tompkins County will present "Fracking with CO2: Examining the Plan for the Southern Tier'' on  Wednesday, March 20, 2024 starting at 7pm via ZOOM.  The speaker is Irene Weiser, a retired veterinarian, 3-term town council member, Coordinator of Fossil Free Tompkins, and longtime environmental activist. Co-sponsors include Broome-Tioga, Cortland, and Steuben-Chemung chapters of the League of Women Voters, To register, please click here.
